March Means Rosies and Ruth!

We do like to time travel here at the “Strolls”. We enjoy heading back to the early days of flight or perhaps to the 1940’s. We’ve been thrilled to partner with The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Family Day Events “Women in Aviation and Space Days” We’ve sent “Rosie the Riveters” “Early Stewardesses”

and “Ruth Law: Pioneer Aviator” to these fabulous events and the reception is always delightful. Whether at the Museum in Washington or the spacious Udvar Hazy site in Chantilly, Virginia, a trip to Air and Space is always fantastic. We visited NASM this March and had a blast!

Rosies and Ruth!

On September 12th, I journeyed to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum’s “Women in Aviation and Space” with precious cargo. I came to present a character, “Ruth Law”, the pioneering aviator but I brought with me two talented actor/interpreters portraying “Rosie the Riveter”. Desiree Gibson and Laura Rocklyn were the Rosies and they were a sensation. While I posed and regaled guests with Ruth Law’s daring, record setting, feats in the Early Aviation Gallery, the “Rosie’s” worked on the main floor, helping guests dress and pose in front of a Rosie backdrop (and a spectacular aircraft). The actor/interpreters told guests what the women working in aircraft and wartime factories did and how they lived. It’s a fascinating story and one that guests were hungry for.

September Events from Historic Strolls

September excitement! On the 12th, Natalie will appear as Ruth Law at the National Air and Space Museum along with Desiree and Laura as “Rosie the Riveter”.

And on September 19th, our Civil War tour, “Courage”, will feature the year 1865 in Washington history. A portion of proceeds from this tour, usually donated to Capital Area Food Bank, will be split between the Food Bank and Unicef

It’s a busy time but it’s going to be even busier in October when Ghost Story Tour returns! So enjoy these images from the past year while we get ready to time travel.

Aviators and Astronomers and America’s first female Attorney.

We’ve been working on some interesting characters over the past 10 months. Here Natalie portrays aviator “Ruth Law” for National Air and Space Museum and she recently appeared as Phoebe Waterman Haas at NASM.

Gale Munro performed as “Margaret Brent” this month in Maryland at an event as well. Miss Brent was America’s first female attorney, serving as Lord Baltmore’s lawyer. She became the first woman to request the right to vote (in 1648?) in Maryland.

History on the Move….

Perhaps you need an historic figure for your event or presentation. But whom? Dolley Madison, to bring a touch of 1814 to your War of 1812 program? Or maybe you need a literary figure such as Jane Austin or Louisa May Alcott? We may have just what you require. Since 1999 I’ve been “collecting” actors who can recreate a historic personage. You might need someone as a greeter or as a floater, mingling with guests at an event but not performing a monologue. Or you may require a presentation. I’ve created original programs where the actors interact with the audience while dispensing tidbits about the era they represent in an informal manner. In the photo above, James Breen, an award-winning actor, performs as “Thomas Burgess:Lock keeper” in an original piece at a private event in an actual lock house on the C and O Canal.

We even have a few “Downton Abbey” characters (new!) in 2014. Downton is new for us but we’ve been providing Victorians and Edwardians for some time on walking tours and in historic house museum presentations.
